Disability In Tech - The Missed Opportunity (Solo Talk)10:20am - 10:30am Feb 13These days diversity in tech is something talked about quite regularly. But usually, when we’re talking about diversity, we’re not including disability.
With the World Health Organisation (WHO) reporting that one in five people (or just over one billion) globally have some form of disability, not including disability when we’re talking about diversity is a missed opportunity.
How do we make disability part of the diversity conversation, why is it important and how will it make a difference to society?

We've got a time machine, now what are we going to do with it? (Panel Discussion)1:00pm - 1:30pm Feb 13Growing up in Australia came with a sense that we were lagging behind our bigger, 'cooler' brother of the USA - movies, pop music, concert tours all took weeks or months to get to us - if at all. But Silicon Valley doesn't always lead the way. Mistakes were made in the 'early' days of diversity and inclusion: centering men at Women in Tech events, a focus on women first instead of race, and the victim-blamey rhetoric of women needing to change their behaviour. And perhaps the biggest mistake of all is that despite a decade since the first D&I efforts - not much has changed.
How can the tech industry in Australia avoid the same and chart a different course for the future?

Fundamentals of Effective Allyship3:55pm - 4:05pm Feb 13We’re all a part of the tech community. Unfortunately, we often fail to reflect on what that means and what responsibilities it conveys for us as individuals. It's easy to assume the status quo cannot be challenged at the individual level, or get paralysed trying to search for ways on how to do so.
This talk offers actionable steps for practising proactive, intersectional allyship that any member of the community can and should take on.
